Chandigarh: The Punjab and Haryana High Court has taken a tough stand against Jalandhar-based popular pastor Ankur Narula and his organization, the Church of Signs and Wonders. Hearing a public interest litigation filed by Tejaswi Minhas, the court issued notices to the central and Punjab governments, seeking their responses.
In the petition, serious allegations have been made against the pastor like conversion in the name of miraculous cure, violation of Foreign Contribution (FCRA) rules and money laundering.
High Court action and main allegations
A division bench headed by Chief Justice Sheel Nagu issued a notice, citing the seriousness of the matter. The petitioner’s lawyer, Vishal Garg Narwana, argued in court that Pastor Ankur Narula and his wife, Sonia Narula, were misleading poor and innocent people under the guise of “anointing oil” and “miracle healing.”
The court was told that these activities are in direct violation of the Drugs and Magic Remedies Act, 1954. These so-called miracles are being propagated using social media platforms such as YouTube and Facebook to influence and convert vulnerable sections of society.
Foreign connections and violation of visa rules
The petition also makes a significant revelation that Ankur Narula’s practices are inspired by the controversial Nigerian preacher, T.B. Joshua. It alleges that foreign missionaries are being invited to India on tourist visas and forced to engage in religious activities, which violates the Foreigners Act of 1946.
Fears of funding and tax evasion
Questions have also been raised about the organization’s financial activities. According to the petition, the organization is receiving foreign donations without a valid FCRA registration. Clocks and “anointing oil” are being sold on the church premises without any GST bills.
Church construction also challenged
When no action was taken at the administrative level despite a complaint filed on January 12th, the matter reached the High Court. The petition also challenges the legality of the construction of the large church building in Khambra village. The governments will now have to clarify their positions during the next hearing.
