Punjab and Haryana HC Chief Justice Sheel Nagu promoted as SC Judge

Justice Sheel Nagu, Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, has been appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court. The Central Government has issued the official order regarding his elevation, approving the recommendation made by the Supreme Court Collegium. His name features among the five names that have received the President’s approval.

This information was shared by the Union Minister of Law and Justice, Arjun Meghwal. Posting on his social media account, ‘X’, he wrote: “Exercising the powers conferred under Article 124(2) of the Constitution of India, the President of India, in consultation with the Chief Justice of India, has accorded approval for the appointment of the following individuals as Judges of the Supreme Court of India. I extend my heartfelt best wishes to them.”

Who is Justice Sheel Nagu?

Justice Sheel Nagu was appointed on July 4, 2024. He took the oath as the Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court on July 9, 2024. He has served in this capacity for 692 days. During this tenure, he delivered several significant verdicts. He was the 36th permanent Chief Justice of the High Court.

Sheel Nagu’s 4 Key Verdicts

While serving as the Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, he delivered judgments in several crucial cases involving Chandigarh, Punjab, and Haryana.

Taking suo motu cognizance of an incident involving manual sewer cleaning at Punjab University, Chandigarh, he imposed a complete ban on this practice. He issued directives for the strict adherence to safety protocols.

In the interest of environmental conservation, he halted the felling of 150-year-old trees for the construction of a police station in Sonipat, Haryana, and directed the government to identify an alternative site.

To streamline police administration, he mandated that the registration of an FIR be made compulsory immediately upon the receipt of a complaint regarding a serious crime, emphasizing that no delays of any kind would be tolerated.

Furthermore, to preserve the original urban character of Chandigarh, he stayed the construction of the Tribune Chowk flyover and suggested that the administration consider an underpass as an alternative option.
