Punjab heat crosses 45°C; power cuts hit cities

In Punjab, while the temperature crossing 45 degrees is causing severe heat, people in several cities are quite troubled by power cuts. The power department’s claims that there would be no power cuts are also proving to be false. From 6 AM today, electricity went out again in Jalandhar and Pathankot. Meanwhile, in Ludhiana, even after a 2-hour cut, the power outage continues.

On the other hand, the meteorological department has also issued a heatwave and warm night alert from April 27 to April 30. The department has advised people to go out of their homes less between 12 PM and 4 PM and to pay special attention to food, drinks, and health.

It is worth noting that late last night the power department had said that there would be a halt on cuts. Until April 30, no work on 11 kV and above (PTW) will be allowed without the written approval of the zonal office.

The order stated that all previously scheduled shutdowns have been canceled immediately. All field officers should stop ongoing work immediately and restore the power supply as soon as possible. Strictly follow these instructions and give it the highest priority.

Earlier, the electricity department had also issued orders for power cuts today in Mohali, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Amritsar, and Patiala.

Frustrated by the continuous power cuts, people in Mansa and Budhlada staged a sit-in at the electricity department’s offices yesterday. They said that there are repeated power cuts at night, which prevents them from sleeping. Additionally, in Bathinda, villagers in Kotsamir and Tungwali village protested by reaching the electricity grid.

Electricity demand reached 12,130 megawatts

On Friday, electricity demand in Punjab reached 12,130 megawatts. After this, Punjab purchased 7 thousand megawatts of electricity from the central pool. Meanwhile, 5,100 megawatts of electricity were generated in Punjab. Despite this, Powercom is unable to meet the demand.

The biggest tension is regarding Powercom’s technical staff. The technical staff is only doing the work that is in their profile. They are not doing any additional work, which is causing considerable time to repair after a feeder trips. They are working only 8-hour shifts. Their strike is until May 25.

Know why feeders are tripping

Harmandeep Singh, president of Powercom’s JE Association, says that frequency plays an important role in the power supply system. The equipment in the power grid across the country is designed according to a frequency of 50 Hz. If the frequency goes even 0.10 Hz above 50 Hz, the feeder trips.

Similarly, when the frequency drops below 50 to 49.90 Hz, the feeder also trips. When the frequency is high, the equipment gets heated, and when it is low, the equipment starts to break, causing the system to trip automatically. Powercom is currently drawing more electricity from the central pool due to increased demand.

Today, there was an order for power outage in various areas.

Mohali: In the Mohali area connected to Phase-7, H-Block, there was an order to cut electricity from 10 AM to 2 PM. In the Zirakpur area, Maya Modern City, Singhpur, PR-7 Road, Dhillon Plaza, and surrounding areas were scheduled for a power outage from 9:30 AM to 5 PM.

Ludhiana: In the areas of Pawa village, Jogiyan village, Nandpur village, Sahnewal Road, Bhagwanpur, Dehlon Road, Tibba Road, near Jaspal Banger, near the wine shop, near Veer Kanda, Pannu Kanda, Janata Nagar, Sindhu area, RK Road, Industrial Area A-Extension, all areas of Phase-4 Industrial Area, Bhagat Singh Colony, Gajja Jain Colony, Moti Nagar Phase-4, Ambedkar Colony, Industrial Area, Transport Nagar, Amloh town, Kishangarh, Industrial Area Doraha, Rania, North City, Alamgir, Chupki, and Jasdev Singh Nagar were also scheduled for a power cut from 10 AM to 2 PM. In Khanna and Amloh, the areas of Amloh town, Kishangarh, Bhamaddi, and Industrial Area Doraha were scheduled for a power outage from 10 AM to 5 PM.

Jalandhar: There was an order to shut off electricity from 10 AM to 2 PM in the areas of Abadpura, New Model Town, Jandu Singha Market, Gate Bazaar, Thapran Mohalla, Karar Khan Mohalla, Treatment Plant, Niviya Sports, and Leather Complex.

Amritsar: There was an order to shut off electricity from 10 AM to 3 PM in the areas of Katra Sant Singh, Lahori Gate, Hatm Tawi, Bag Wala, Naya Kot, Indira Colony, Neenwan Pasa, Valmiki Wala, and Khui Logan Wali.

Patiala: There was an order to shut off electricity from 1 PM to 5 PM in the areas of Phulikian Enclave, Police Line, Central Jail, Mini Secretariat, Kesarbagh, Radhomajra, Naina Enclave, Peeli Road, Arjun Nagar, Lower Mall, Modi College, Preet Gali, and Budda Dal High School area.
