Punjab heat crosses 40°C; Faridkot hottest, alert

Punjab and Chandigarh are experiencing severe heat. For the first time this season, the temperature has reached 45.2 degrees. Faridkot remained the hottest. The state’s temperature is 4.9 degrees above normal. According to the Meteorological Center Chandigarh, today there is a yellow alert for heat wave and warm night. While from April 27 to April 30, a yellow alert has been issued for heat wave, warm night, lightning, and strong winds.

Chandigarh has an orange alert for a two-day heat wave. During this period, wind speeds may reach 40–50 km/h. The meteorological department has advised people to go out less from 12 noon to 4 PM and pay special attention to food, drink, and health. The weather in the state will remain dry today.

There is a heat wave alert in 12 districts and a warm night alert in 7 districts. During this period, Moga, Firozpur, Faridkot, Fazilka, Barnala, Muktsar, Bathinda, Mansa, Sangrur, Patiala, Tarn Taran, and Amritsar have a heat wave alert. While Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Firozpur, Faridkot, Fazilka, Barnala, and Ludhiana will experience warm night conditions.

The maximum temperature in Chandigarh recorded 41.0 degrees. Temperatures above 40 degrees were recorded in 10 districts including Chandigarh, and between 35 to 40 degrees in 12 districts. The maximum temperature recorded in Chandigarh was 41.0 degrees, Chandigarh Airport 40.8 degrees, Amritsar 40.3 degrees, Ludhiana 42.2 degrees, Patiala 42.5 degrees, Bathinda 42.2 degrees, Bathinda Airport 44.2 degrees, Faridkot 45.2 degrees (highest), Fazilka 40.3 degrees, Patiala AWS 40.2 degrees, and Bhakra Dam 41.1 degrees.

In cities with temperatures between 35 and 40 degrees, Pathankot recorded 39.4 degrees, Gurdaspur 39.5 degrees, SBS Nagar (Nawanshahr) 39.5 degrees, Firozpur 39.7 degrees, Hoshiarpur 38.0 degrees, Mohali 39.8 degrees, KVK Pathankot 39.6 degrees, Rupnagar 39.3 degrees, Salern (Hoshiarpur) 38.6 degrees, and Thein Dam 39.0 degrees.

At present, Punjab is experiencing intense heat. A weather system is formed about 6 km above the sky, which is called a western disturbance. It is present over the northern part of India, around 70°E. This may cause a change in the weather, such as clouds, rain, or a storm.

According to the Meteorological Department, between April 27 and May 1, there is a possibility of light rainfall at some places in the state. The maximum temperature will not change significantly for the next 3 days, after which it may drop by about 2 to 4 degrees Celsius. Until April 27, there may be conditions of heat waves and warm nights in some areas. Between April 27 and 29, there is a possibility of storms and lightning with strong winds at a speed of 40–50 km/h, while on April 30, winds of 30–40 km/h may occur.

The weather will be like this for three days:

April 27:
Heat waves will occur in Moga, Firozpur, Faridkot, Barnala, Muktsar, Bathinda, Mansa, Sangrur, Patiala, Tarn Taran, and Amritsar. Warm nights will occur in Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Firozpur, Faridkot, Barnala, and Ludhiana. In Fazilka, Muktsar, Bathinda, Mansa, Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, and Gurdaspur, there may be thunderstorms with strong winds at a speed of 40–50 km/h. Light to moderate rainfall is possible in these districts.

April 28:
In several districts of Punjab, there is a possibility of thunder, lightning, and strong winds at a speed of 30–40 km/h. An alert is issued in Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Firozpur, Fazilka, Faridkot, Muktsar, Moga, Bathinda, Ludhiana, Barnala, Mansa, Sangrur, Fatehgarh Sahib, Rupnagar, Patiala, and Mohali.

April 29:
There is a possibility of storms, lightning, and strong winds at 30–40 km/h in Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Nawanshahr, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Fatehgarh Sahib, Rupnagar, Patiala, Mohali, Ludhiana, and Sangrur. Light to moderate rainfall may also occur in these districts.
