Punjab’s Law and Order Situation ‘Not Satisfactory’: Governor Kataria

Chandigarh: Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria has expressed concern over the law and order situation in the state, saying it remains “not satisfactory” despite the government’s anti-drug campaign.

In an interview, Kataria said incidents such as contract killings, gang wars, bomb blasts and extortion were creating fear among people in Punjab. He also referred to recent violent incidents in Chandigarh, including daylight murders and a bomb blast outside a BJP office, as reasons for heightened concern.

At the same time, the Governor praised the Bhagwant Mann-led government’s anti-drug drive, “Yudh Nashian Virudh,” saying the administration was making serious efforts to tackle the narcotics problem.

Kataria said over 63,000 people had been arrested in connection with drug-related cases during the campaign and noted that narcotics and properties linked to smugglers had been seized.

However, he stressed that Punjab continues to face major security challenges because of cross-border drug smuggling through drones from Pakistan. He described the drug menace in the border state as “very serious” and called for greater public participation to eliminate the problem.

The Governor further said he had discussed law and order concerns with Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav, while emphasising that maintaining peace in the sensitive border state should remain above politics.
