The Punjab government has decided to improve 19,000 kilometers of dilapidated link roads. The road construction company will also be responsible for their maintenance for five years. The width of the roads will be increased from 10 feet to 18 feet.
Survey work for all the roads has already been completed. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann will inaugurate this project today in Tarn Taran. The government will act as the nodal agency for this project.
2,872 crore rupees allocated for roads
This project is crucial for the Punjab government, as the countdown to the 2027 assembly elections has begun. The government has allocated a budget of 3,500 crore rupees for these roads. Of this, 2,872 crore rupees are allocated for repair and maintenance, and 587 crore rupees for other works.
A committee will be formed to inspect the quality
The government is also paying close attention to ensuring that the quality of the roads is not compromised. A coordination committee, consisting of members from both parties, will be formed to oversee the road construction. Although the government had decided to begin the project in August, floods struck, delaying the work.
