After the elections held in the eight municipal corporations of Punjab, the election for the mayor’s post is to be held tomorrow. In five of these municipal corporations — Barnala, Bathinda, Batala, Moga, and Mohali — the Aam Aadmi Party has gained a clear majority, while in Abohar, BJP, and in Kapurthala, Congress has secured a full majority.
In Pathankot, BJP is the largest party, but it is far from a majority. In such a situation, political activities have intensified. About 22 councilors in Mohali have their mobile phones switched off. It is being reported that they are touring the hills of Himachal. Meanwhile, in Bathinda, the mayoral candidates have taken the Aam Aadmi Party councilors on a trip to Salasar.
A complication stuck on the candidacy in Mohali.
There is a deadlock over the claim for the mayor’s position in the Mohali Municipal Corporation. The biggest claim is from Sarabjit Singh Samana, son of the current MLA Kulwant Singh. It is being reported that Sarabjit Singh Samana has reached Himachal Pradesh with 22 councilors, and all their mobile numbers are unreachable. It is being said that all these councilors will reach Mohali directly from Himachal Pradesh during the oath-taking and mayoral election. Until then, they will have no contact with anyone.
On the other hand, the chairman of the Water Supply and Sewerage Board is Dr. Sunny Ahluwalia. He is connected with the senior leaders of the party. In addition, Gurmeet Kaur, who is set to become a counselor for the second time along with her husband, is also ahead in the mayoral race. Sukdev Singh Patwari is in fourth place, winning his election for the fourth time.
No clear majority for anyone in Pathankot, talks of Congress-AAP alliance intensify
No party has received a clear majority in Pathankot, hence for the mayoral seat, Congress-BJP and Aam Aadmi Party are engaged in separate negotiations. Efforts for a Congress-AAP alliance have intensified. For this, there could be an agreement between them for the positions of senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor, while BJP is involved in garnering support from councilors.
BJP needs only 3 councillors for a majority. On the other hand, if Congress and Aam Aadmi Party form an alliance and get the vote of Cabinet Minister Lal Chand Kataruchakk, this number reaches 29 seats.
Aam Aadmi Party has a clear majority in Batala
Batala Municipal Corporation has a total of 50 wards (seats). For a majority, any party needs 26 seats. Aam Aadmi Party has won 30 seats on its own, which is 4 seats more than the magic number of 26 required for a majority. You do not need the support or coalition with any other party (Congress or BJP) to secure the mayor’s seat.
It is completely certain that Aam Aadmi Party will form the mayor in Batala. The biggest upset in the election results occurred in Ward-35 and Ward-46. From here, AAP’s state executive chief and local MLA Aman Sher Singh Sheri Kalsi’s brother Amritpal Singh and his sister Uttamgeet lost the elections.
They have been defeated by Congress candidates Shashi Chanda and Ravinder Tuli. Due to the defeat of the legislator’s family members, now the Aam Aadmi Party will have to choose one face from among its other 30 elected councilors for the post of mayor. The party is deliberating over this.
For the first time in Bathinda, AAP contested the election; currently, there is only one candidate
For the first time, AAP contested elections in all 50 wards in Bathinda. Out of these, 35 councilors were from AAP, 5 from Congress, 3 independents, 1 from BJP, and other candidates won. To have a majority for the mayor’s position in the corporation, 26 councilors are required. Since AAP has a majority with 35 councilors, the mayor has been made from AAP.
So far, only the councilor from Ward 46 and former mayor Pardamanjit Mehta appear to be candidates for the mayor’s post. One major reason for this is that last time, several AAP candidates contested the election themselves, citing Amit Arora. Urban MLA Jagroop Singh Gill also expressed happiness regarding former mayor Mehta’s views. Despite this, former mayor Pardamanjit Mehta and his father Parameshwar Amarjit Mehta contested the election in the city on their own.
All candidates had their forms filled. Their work was reviewed by going there. Whether you will win big or not this time. In such a situation, these two managed the booths on the voting day. As a result, you reached the corporation with the most 35 councilors winning.
