Punjab Likely to Get New DGP Today as UPSC Meets to Finalise Panel

The way for the appointment of a permanent DGP in Punjab will be cleared today. UPSC has called a meeting today to shortlist the DGP’s panel. In this meeting, a panel of three officers will be prepared and sent to the Punjab government, on the basis of which the government will appoint an officer as DGP.

In July 2022, the Punjab government had appointed Gaurav Yadav as the acting DGP. Since then, questions were being raised on his appointment. After a decision of the Supreme Court, the process of appointing a permanent DGP was started in Punjab.

The panel of officers will be decided and sent to the Punjab government

In February this year, the UPSC had sought names of officers from the Punjab government for the appointment of a permanent DGP. After this, the Punjab government sent the list of senior IPS officers to the UPSC. Of these, the UPSC will decide on a panel of three officers today and send it to the Punjab government.

After the panel is sent by the government, a committee is formed to consider it. It consists of the Chairman of the UPSC (as Chairman), the Union Home Secretary or his representative, the Chief Secretary of the State, the current DGP of the State and the head of a Central Police Organization (not belonging to the respective State cadre). This committee finalizes the three names and sends them to the state government, after which the government decides on the final appointment.
