Chandigarh: Punjab’s Social Security, Women and Child Development Minister, Dr. Baljeet Kaur, made a significant announcement. She said that nearly three years have passed since the government came to power, and during this time, the number of children receiving post-matric scholarships has increased by 35 per cent.
The minister announced that the government is now launching an Overseas Scholarship Scheme for higher education. Under this scheme, students with an annual family income of less than 8 lakh rupees, who have scored more than 60 per cent marks, and are under 35 years of age, will be eligible to benefit. Significantly, 30 per cent of this scheme will be reserved for girls.
Admission will be available in 500 universities
The government has selected 500 universities worldwide for children to enroll in. Under the scholarship, the government will cover visa costs, ticket expenses, tuition fees, and an annual maintenance allowance of ₹13.17 lakh (approximately $1.31 million USD). This assistance will be provided based on the duration of the child’s course—whether it’s three or four years. The government will also cover medical insurance costs. However, only two children per family will be eligible for this program.
Golden opportunity for poor families
Minister Kaur said that this scheme is specifically for poor families whose children want to pursue a better future by studying abroad. The government will soon launch a dedicated website where children can select their preferred university.
PCS course also announced
In addition, Minister Kaur announced that a PCS course will be started at Ambedkar College in Mohali. Forty students will be selected based on entrance exams and will receive two months of specialized training.
