Punjab Police bust illegal arms module linked to Pakistan; two held

Amritsar: Punjab Police have busted a cross-border illegal arms module linked to Pakistan-based smugglers with the arrest of two operatives and the recovery of six sophisticated pistols, Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Gaurav Yadav said on Wednesday. The arrested accused have been identified as Gurpreet Singh alias Gopi (22) and Surjit Singh (35), the latter having a criminal history with multiple cases registered against him, including under the NDPS Act.

Weapons Supplied to Gangsters on Foreign Handlers’ Directions

The seized weapons include two 9mm Glock pistols and four .30 bore pistols, along with two cartridges. DGP Yadav said the accused were actively involved in illegal arms trafficking and were supplying weapons to gangsters on the directions of their foreign-based handlers. He added that further investigations are underway to establish both forward and backward linkages in the cross-border network.

Drone-Based Smuggling Route Uncovered

Sharing details of the operation, Commissioner of Police (Amritsar) Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said that acting on specific intelligence inputs, police teams apprehended Gurpreet Singh and recovered three .30 bore pistols, one Glock pistol and two cartridges from his possession. Sustained interrogation revealed that he was in direct contact with Pakistan-based smugglers through various social media platforms and was receiving consignments of illegal arms via drones. Based on his disclosures, police arrested Surjit Singh and recovered one Glock pistol and one .30 bore pistol from him. A case has been registered under Sections 25 (1-A) and 25 (6, 7 and 8) of the Arms Act at Islamabad Police Station in Amritsar.
