Police Barred from Making Reels in Uniform; Live Location Sharing Also Not Allowed

Chandigarh: In view of the increasing incidents of police personnel posting inappropriate videos, reels and entertainment content on social media in uniform, the Punjab Police has implemented strict guidelines. In recent days, some police officers were seen making dance, bhangra and other entertainment videos in uniform, raising questions about the credibility of the department.

In view of this, the DGP office has directed all Range IGs, DIGs, Commissioners of Police and District SSPs to keep a close watch on social media activities and take immediate action against violators.

Cyber Crime Wing appointed as nodal agency

The State Cyber Crime Wing has been appointed as the nodal agency for monitoring social media. The wing will prepare regular reports on suspicious posts and activities and present them in meetings chaired by the DGP. The department has clarified that the annual confidential reports (ACRs) of employees violating social media rules will be affected and their promotions may be stopped.

Recent incidents have added to the gravity of the situation.

According to department officials, several incidents related to social media in the last few months have forced the police administration to take strict action. Incidents like the viral video of a woman constable from Bathinda, her subsequent arrest in a drug case and the seizure of heroin at a car wash in Mohali have increased the department’s concern.

DGP Gaurav Yadav held a meeting with senior officers to finalize the new rules, which were later approved by the home department.
