Punjab Cuts Power Tariffs Ahead of Polls, Consumers Gain

In a major relief for electricity consumers, the Punjab State Electricity Regulatory Commission (PSERC) has announced a reduction in power tariffs for the financial year 2026-27. The decision, which comes ahead of the upcoming state elections, is expected to lower electricity bills for domestic, commercial, and industrial consumers across Punjab.

According to officials, the revised tariff order will come into effect from April 1, providing substantial financial relief to households and businesses throughout the state.

Tariff Cut Announced by Power Regulator

The tariff reduction was approved by the state electricity regulator following a review of the annual revenue requirement of the power utilities. The decision is expected to benefit millions of electricity consumers.

Under the revised structure, electricity rates have been reduced between 50 paise and ₹1.50 per unit for various categories of consumers. The reduction applies to domestic users, commercial establishments, and industrial consumers.

Officials said the decision will provide overall financial relief estimated at around ₹7,851.91 crore to power consumers across the state.

The move is seen as one of the largest tariff reductions in recent years and comes at a time when households are grappling with rising living costs.

Domestic Consumers to Benefit Significantly

Domestic electricity users are expected to be among the biggest beneficiaries of the tariff revision. The regulator has reduced electricity charges for residential consumers by 55 paise to ₹1.55 per unit, depending on the consumption category.

This change will directly reduce monthly electricity bills for households, particularly those with higher power consumption.

The reduction also complements the state government’s existing electricity subsidy scheme that already provides 300 units of free power per month to many households.

The revised tariff order also offers relief to commercial and industrial consumers.

For commercial establishments, the tariff has been reduced between 50 paise and 79 paise per unit, which is expected to benefit small businesses, shops, and service providers.

Industrial consumers will also see a reduction ranging from 12 paise to 75 paise per unit, depending on their power usage category.

Industry representatives believe the move will help reduce operational costs and improve competitiveness for manufacturing and service sectors operating in Punjab.

EV Charging Rates Reduced

In another significant decision, the regulator has also lowered electricity tariffs for electric vehicle charging stations.

The new tariff for EV charging has been fixed at ₹5 per kVAh, which officials say is among the lowest EV charging power tariffs in the country.

The move is expected to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles and support the state’s efforts to promote cleaner transportation.

Power Supply Cost Reduced

The regulator said the average cost of supplying electricity has declined significantly. The average cost of supply has dropped from ₹7.15 per unit to ₹6.15 per unit, which has allowed authorities to reduce tariffs without increasing the financial burden on power utilities.

Experts believe improved financial management and adjustments in operational costs have contributed to the reduced supply cost.

Political Context Ahead of Elections

The tariff reduction comes at a politically significant time, as Punjab is expected to head into the next state assembly elections in the coming months.

Political observers say measures that directly benefit consumers such as lower electricity tariffs are often announced ahead of elections to provide relief to voters.

However, officials from the regulatory commission maintain that the decision was based on financial calculations and the review of power sector costs.
