Explosion on Railway Track in Punjab Damages Rails; Mutilated Body Found Nearby

Patiala: An IED blast occurred on the Ambala-Amritsar rail freight corridor line on Monday night. The incident took place around 8:30 PM near the Rajpura-Shambhu railway station. Upon receiving the information, the GRP (Government Railway Police), RPF (Railway Protection Force), Punjab Police and other investigative agencies rushed to the scene and initiated an inquiry.

According to reports, security threats regarding the railway lines had been received a short while ago; however, the police reportedly took these threats lightly and no investigation was conducted. This incident has occurred in the wake of that oversight.

An unidentified body blown to pieces by the blast was also recovered near the scene of the incident. Efforts are currently underway to identify the deceased. Along with the bodily remains, a turban containing strands of hair was also recovered.

Two Motorcycles with UP and Haryana Registration Numbers Recovered

According to police sources, two motorcycles bearing registration numbers from Uttar Pradesh (UP) and Haryana—were recovered from the vicinity of the incident site. The police are currently engaged in scrutinizing these vehicles. The location where the incident occurred is a desolate area situated close to the Haryana border.

The SSP Shared the Following Details Regarding the Case…

• Report of a Low-Intensity Explosion: Speaking on the incident, Patiala SSP Varun Sharma stated that late last night, the Patiala Police received information regarding a low-intensity explosion on a railway track near the Shambhu-Haryana border. Upon receiving this information, the DIG (Deputy Inspector General) of the Patiala Range and other senior officials immediately rushed to the scene.
• The Perpetrator Was Killed: The SSP further explained that an inspection of the site revealed that this was not merely an explosion, but rather an ‘attempted detonation’, an unsuccessful attempt to carry out a blast. The individual attempting to carry out the explosion died during the attempt, and his body was recovered from the scene.
• SIM card and other evidence recovered from the site: An official stated, “No loss of life or property was sustained by any other individual in this incident.” The police have recovered various pieces of evidence from the scene, including a SIM card. A technical investigation has been initiated to unravel the entire conspiracy, involving the GRP, the RPF, and other security agencies.

Police Took Warning Lightly

Just a week prior, a threat to bomb railway tracks across Punjab and Haryana had been issued via an anonymous email. The email specifically threatened to carry out explosions on the railway tracks stretching from Ambala to Delhi at 8:11 AM on April 24.

Threats to blow up railway tracks were also issued for locations within Punjab, including Ludhiana, Amritsar, Bathinda, and Ferozepur. The Railway Police and investigative agencies took these threats lightly; consequently, the perpetrators were able to carry out the attack.

Second Blast on Rail Lines in Four Months

This marks the second major incident of a bomb explosion on railway lines in Punjab. Previously, on January 23 of this year, an explosion occurred at Khanpur in Sirhind, resulting in the derailment of a goods train’s locomotive. The train pilot was also injured in that incident.
