Punjab, Chandigarh Receive Heavy Rain; Trees Uprooted, Sirmaur Schools Closed After Downpour

Mohali: Heavy rain and gusty winds lashed Chandigarh, Mohali and several parts of Punjab overnight, bringing much-needed relief from the scorching heat but also causing disruptions. A tree uprooted in Chandigarh’s Sector 39 blocked a road, while continuous rainfall led to waterlogging in several areas. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light to moderate rainfall across parts of Punjab until July 12, after which monsoon activity is expected to weaken.

In neighbouring Himachal Pradesh, incessant rain over the past 24 hours caused water to enter several houses in Kala Amb in Sirmaur district. In view of the prevailing weather conditions, the district administration declared a holiday for all schools and colleges on Friday.

Rain alert issued for seven Punjab districts

The Chandigarh Meteorological Centre has issued a rainfall alert for the following districts:

• Patiala
• Fatehgarh Sahib
• Rupnagar (Ropar)
• Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar (Nawanshahr)
• Ludhiana
• Hoshiarpur
• Chandigarh

Rain has continued intermittently in Chandigarh and Mohali since Thursday night, providing relief from the recent spell of intense heat.

Chandigarh records highest rainfall

According to the Meteorological Centre, Chandigarh received the highest rainfall in the region during the last 24 hours.

Rainfall recorded:

• Chandigarh – 34 mm
• Chandigarh Airport – 32.6 mm
• Mohali – 21 mm
• Patiala – 9.9 mm
• Sri Anandpur Sahib – 5.5 mm
• Bhakra Dam – 4 mm
• Thein Dam – 0.5 mm
• Saleran (Hoshiarpur) – 0.5 mm

Most other districts in Punjab witnessed little or no rainfall during the same period.

Temperature remains below normal

Despite the rains, Punjab’s average maximum temperature increased by 0.6°C over the past 24 hours but remained 2.5°C below normal. Faridkot recorded the state’s highest maximum temperature at 42.4°C, while areas receiving rain experienced noticeably cooler weather.

Why is rainfall decreasing?

Meteorologists say the monsoon trough is gradually shifting towards the Himalayan foothills, allowing dry northwesterly winds to enter Punjab. This shift is expected to reduce humidity levels, resulting in a decline in widespread rainfall despite cloudy skies.

According to Surender Paul, Director of the Meteorological Centre, Chandigarh:

• July 10–12: Light to moderate rain likely across several parts of Punjab.
• July 13–15: Rainfall activity expected to reduce significantly, with only isolated showers.
• Temperatures are likely to rise gradually as the monsoon weakens and weather conditions turn relatively dry.

Sirmaur schools closed after flooding

In Himachal Pradesh’s Sirmaur district, heavy rainfall led to water entering homes in Kala Amb, prompting the district administration to suspend classes in all schools and colleges as a precautionary measure. Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious in low-lying and flood-prone areas until weather conditions improve.
