Rain Alert in Punjab, Storm Likely in 11 Districts Today

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for rain, thunderstorms and lightning in several parts of Punjab and the Union Territory of Chandigarh. The weather department has warned that gusty winds, lightning strikes and sudden rainfall may occur in at least 11 districts of Punjab, including Ludhiana, over the next 24 hours.

According to meteorological officials, changing weather patterns caused by western disturbances are expected to bring unstable atmospheric conditions, leading to scattered showers and thunderstorms across the region. Residents have been advised to remain cautious, especially during lightning activity and strong winds.

Temperature Drops Sharply After Weather Shift

Along with the rain alert, a sharp drop in temperature has been recorded in parts of Punjab. The minimum temperature in some areas has fallen to around 6.3 degrees Celsius, marking a noticeable decline compared to previous days.

Weather experts say the sudden drop is linked to cloud cover and rain activity expected in the region. The cooler conditions may continue for the next couple of days, providing temporary relief from the rising temperatures that had been observed earlier this month.

Meteorologists added that fluctuating temperatures are common during seasonal transitions when moist winds interact with warm air masses, often triggering thunderstorms and rainfall.

These Districts Likely to Witness Rain and Thunderstorms

The weather department has identified 11 districts where rain, thunderstorms and lightning are likely to occur. Among the major districts under the alert are Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Amritsar, Patiala, Gurdaspur, Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala, Rupnagar, SBS Nagar (Nawanshahr) and Mohali.

In addition, Chandigarh may also experience cloudy skies, gusty winds and isolated rainfall. Strong winds may reach speeds of 40–50 km/h in some areas during thunderstorms, which could temporarily disrupt normal activities.

Authorities have advised farmers and residents to take precautions, particularly during lightning and storm conditions.

Advisory for Residents and Farmers

The IMD has issued several precautionary guidelines to minimize risks during the stormy weather:

• Avoid standing in open fields during lightning.

• Stay away from tall trees and electric poles.

• Secure loose objects that may be blown away by strong winds.

• Farmers should protect crops and equipment from possible hail or heavy rain.

Officials also advised commuters to remain cautious while traveling, as sudden rain and wind could reduce visibility on roads.

Weather Expected to Remain Unstable

Meteorologists believe the rain and thunderstorm activity may continue intermittently over the next few days in parts of Punjab and neighbouring states. Forecasts indicate partly cloudy skies with occasional rain or thundershowers during the week.

While the rainfall may bring temporary relief from heat, experts warn that sudden weather changes could lead to localized disruptions such as waterlogging, lightning hazards and brief power outages.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have urged residents to stay updated with official weather bulletins and alerts.
