Rain and Storms Hit Punjab and Chandigarh; Power Outages Reported Across Mohali and Jalandhar, Alert Issued for 8 Districts

Punjab: The weather in Punjab and Chandigarh has taken a turn. Rain is falling in several places, including Jalandhar, Ludhiana, and Mohali. Darkness has descended over the region even during the day, and stormy winds are blowing. Power outages have been reported in many areas.

According to the Chandigarh Meteorological Centre, there is a possibility of rain accompanied by thunder, lightning, and strong winds in eight districts today. A ‘Yellow Alert’ has been issued in this regard.

These districts include Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, and Rupnagar. Strong winds, gusting at 40 to 50 kilometres per hour, are expected in these areas. The department has also forecast light to moderate rainfall in these districts. According to the Meteorological Department, these weather conditions are expected to persist until May 6.

Highest Temperature Recorded in Bathinda

On Friday, the maximum temperature was recorded at 39 degrees in Faridkot and 39.5 degrees in Fazilka, while Bathinda remained the hottest spot, with the mercury touching 40.2 degrees. Temperatures recorded in other cities included 36.2 degrees in Chandigarh, 37.1 degrees in Amritsar, 38.0 degrees in Ludhiana, 37.5 degrees in Patiala, 37.9 degrees in Ferozepur, 35.3 degrees in Hoshiarpur and Mohali, 35.6 degrees in Pathankot, and 36.1 degrees in SBS Nagar. Ludhiana witnessed the most significant rise in temperature—2.8 degrees—while Faridkot and Fazilka each saw an increase of 2 degrees.

Current Weather Conditions

According to the Meteorological Department, a Western Disturbance remains active and is currently moving forward in conjunction with upper-level westerly winds. Meanwhile, a cyclonic circulation system persists over North Haryana and surrounding areas, ensuring that weather patterns will continue to fluctuate. A second Western Disturbance, which had been positioned over Jammu and Kashmir, has now moved further ahead. As a result, Punjab, Haryana, and neighboring regions may experience cloudy skies, strong winds, and isolated spells of rain. Consequently, an ‘Orange Alert’ has been issued for May 4 and 5, warning of rain, lightning, and strong winds. A ‘Yellow Alert’ is in effect for May 6, while rain is forecast for May 7 and 8.
