Chandigarh: The Punjab government on Wednesday extended school holidays across the state until January 13 in view of dense fog and severe cold conditions, Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains announced.

The decision has been taken to ensure the safety of students as large parts of Punjab continue to experience poor visibility and harsh winter conditions, disrupting normal life and road traffic.

In a statement, Bains said that all government, aided and private schools will remain closed till January 13, and regular classes will resume thereafter, subject to weather conditions.

“Considering the persistent dense fog and cold wave in Punjab, and keeping in mind the safety of children, the state government has decided to extend school holidays till January 13,” the minister said.

Punjab has been witnessing dense fog during early morning and night hours over the past several days, leading to reduced visibility and an increase in road accidents in several districts.

The education department has advised school authorities to stay alert and follow further instructions, while parents have welcomed the decision, citing concerns over children commuting in dangerous weather conditions.

Weather officials have forecast continued foggy conditions in the coming days, prompting authorities to remain cautious.
