Punjab SIR 2026: What to Do If You Receive Notice, Documents Required Based on Date of Birth

Chandigarh: The second phase of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls 2026 is underway in Punjab, with the Election Commission issuing notices to voters whose details could not be mapped with the previous electoral roll.

The Chief Electoral Officer of Punjab has advised voters not to panic if they receive a notice. Instead, they should carefully check the notice and submit the required documents to the concerned Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) or Assistant Electoral Registration Officer (AERO).

The documents required for verification depend on the voter’s date of birth. The Election Commission has prescribed different requirements for three age groups.

Who needs to submit how many documents?

Under the SIR verification rules, voters born in India before July 1, 1987, generally need to provide one document relating to themselves if asked to establish their date or place of birth.

Those born between July 1, 1987 and December 2, 2004 need to provide one document for themselves and one document for either their father or mother.

Those born on or after December 3, 2004 need to provide documents for themselves, their father and their mother. If a parent is not an Indian citizen, additional documents relating to that parent’s status may be required.

What documents can voters submit?

The Election Commission has provided an indicative list of documents that can be used to establish date or place of birth.

These include a birth certificate, passport, matriculation or educational certificate issued by a recognised board or university, permanent residence certificate issued by the competent state authority, family register prepared by the state or local authority, forest rights certificate, caste certificate issued by the competent authority, National Register of Citizens where applicable, and certain government-issued identity or service documents.

Voters should submit documents relevant to the specific information sought in the notice rather than submitting documents unnecessarily.

What if your name is already in the 2003 voter list?

The previous SIR electoral roll is important in the mapping process.

The Election Commission has made the previous SIR electoral roll available through its voter services portal, where electors can search their name and related details. For Punjab, voters can check the relevant 2003 electoral roll and verify whether their own or their parents’ details are available.

The ECI’s SIR portal specifically provides a “Search in last SIR E-Roll” facility for checking previous-roll information.

If previous-roll details supplied by an elector are unavailable or do not match the database, the ERO can issue a notice asking the elector to provide documents according to the applicable category.

What if your name appears in the 2003 roll but you still receive a notice?

A notice does not necessarily mean that a voter will lose their name from the electoral roll.

In cases where previous SIR details are unavailable or do not match the database, the voter is required to respond to the notice and provide the documents requested by the ERO.

Therefore, voters should carefully check the spelling of their name, the names of relatives and other particulars in the old electoral roll before submitting their response.

What should you do after receiving an SIR notice?

Voters who receive a notice should:

1. Read the notice carefully and identify the reason for verification.
2. Check their name in the previous SIR electoral roll, including the 2003 roll applicable to Punjab.
3. Identify the correct birth-date category under the SIR rules.
4. Collect the required documents for themselves and, where applicable, their parents.
5. Submit the response and documents to the concerned ERO/AERO within the prescribed period.
6. Keep the acknowledgement or proof of submission safely for future reference.

The Election Commission’s current voter services portal also provides an online facility to submit documents against a notice issued under SIR 2026.

Voters can use the Election Commission’s official voter services portal to search their name in the previous SIR electoral roll. The portal allows electors to search using details such as state, district, Assembly Constituency, polling station and elector information.

The ECI has also provided 1950 as its voter helpline number for assistance.

Don’t panic after receiving a notice

Receiving an SIR notice is part of the verification process where electoral-roll details require clarification or could not be mapped with previous records. Voters should respond within the prescribed timeline and provide the relevant documents rather than ignoring the notice.

For Punjab’s SIR 2026 exercise, the draft electoral roll was published on July 31, while the period for claims and objections runs until August 30. The final electoral roll is scheduled for publication on October 1, 2026.
