Chandigarh: Punjab will also conduct a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists before the 2027 Assembly elections. SIR work in Punjab will begin in February or March. Punjab’s Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) has already begun preparations for the SIR.
According to reports, a day earlier, the Central Election Commission held a virtual meeting with election officials from all states, during which time it announced the launch of the SIR in Punjab in February-March. Following the Central Election Commission’s directive, the Chief Executive Officer of Punjab has ordered the correction of discrepancies in the voter lists.
Focus on Improving Electoral Mapping Percentage
The Chief Executive Officer of Punjab has directed district election officers to correct the voter lists for polling booths with less than 50% electoral mapping percentage and improve their mapping percentage. Ensure that as many voter lists as possible are corrected before the SIR begins.
BLOs Given Five Days to Fix Voter List Errors
BLOs will be correcting errors in voter lists from today until February 3rd. To do this, they have been relieved from their departments for five days. During these five days, BLOs will correct errors they made while preparing the color voter list.
The BLOs have included black and white photographs of some voters, while others’ photographs are blurred in the lists. Furthermore, some photographs are placed askew. Typical errors were made when filling in names and other information. The BLOs must correct all these errors within five days.
What Is Electoral Mapping Percentage?
The electoral mapping percentage indicates how many voters’ details from the electoral rolls in a given area have been correctly verified and digitally linked. This includes the voter’s name, address, age, photo, and the correct mapping of the relevant polling station.
The higher this percentage, the more accurate and reliable the voter list is considered. A low electoral mapping percentage indicates that errors are present in the list. Therefore, the Election Commission periodically conducts SIRs to correct voter lists.
SIR Aims to Remove Fake and Duplicate Voters
The purpose of the SIR is to add the names of new eligible voters, remove the names of deceased or relocated voters, and clean up duplicate entries. This process is now underway in Punjab. This process will correct errors in the voter list and remove fraudulent voters from the lists.
