Punjab: Special session to pass law for punishment of sacrilege today

Chandigarh: A one-day special session of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha is being held on today’s historic day to pass a law to prevent the sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib. In this, a new law will be passed by amending the Guru Granth Sahib Act of 2008.

Stricter Punishment range 

This law, which will be passed after the amendment in the act, provides for strict punishment ranging from 10 years to life imprisonment for those who commit sacrilege.

The special session, which is scheduled to begin at 11 am, will be held by paying tribute to the personalities who have passed away in the past few days.

After this, the bill will be presented for debate. There is every possibility of a heated debate on it. This is a state act and after its passage, there is no need to send it to the President, it will come into effect as soon as the Governor gives his direct approval.

Earlier during a meeting, CM Bhagwant Singh Mann stated, “The session will be convened on the occasion of Khalsa Sajna Diwas, and the act will be formed in consultation with Sant Samaj and legal experts. Opinions from eminent lawyers across the country will also be sought while preparing the draft of this legislation to ensure exemplary punishment to perpetrators of this heinous crime.”
