Punjab to begin flood relief compensation from Oct 15

To provide significant relief to flood-affected people in Punjab, Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has announced compensation measures for farmers in affected districts, including Rs. 7,200 per acre for sand extraction under the “Jiska Khet Uski Reet” scheme. The compensation for crop losses under SDRF rules has been raised, with new rates of Rs. 10,000 per acre for 26 to 75 percent losses, and Rs. 20,000 per acre for 75 to 100 percent losses.

The Chief Minister announced that the state government would contribute Rs 14,000 to the Rs 20,000 per acre compensation, the highest by any state government in the country. Among those affected, the compensation for fully damaged houses has been increased from Rs 1.20 lakh to Rs  1.50 lakh, and for partially damaged houses, the compensation has been increased from Rs 6,500 to Rs 35,100. The state government will provide Rs 47,000 per hectare or Rs 18,000 per acre for those whose land was washed away by rivers. The Chief Minister also made the significant announcement that now is the time for rehabilitation, so the Punjab government will begin distributing compensation to flood-affected people by October 15th, before Diwali. The Chief Minister stated that the state government has requested the Government of India to increase the flood compensation to Rs 50,000 per acre.

Earlier, during the Assembly session, the Punjab government had requested the central government to release at least Rs 20,000 crore in aid. The Chief Minister is making every effort to ensure that the losses suffered by the floods are compensated as quickly as possible so that Punjab can stand firmly on its feet again. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday regarding relief for the flood-affected people. During the meeting, he described the amount of Rs 1,600 crore released by the central government as insufficient.

According to reports, the Home Minister assured that the Rs 1,600 crore amount is token money.
Now is the time to stand together. The state urgently needs funds to repair flood-damaged infrastructure and border fencing, and restore affected communities. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann urges everyone—capable individuals, organizations, and the central government—to act immediately by contributing funds and assistance. Only through prompt, collective action can the impact of the floods be overcome and safety restored.
