Vigilance Bureau Action: ASI arrested red-handed while accepting Rs 30,000 bribe

The Punjab Vigilance Bureau, in its ongoing campaign against corruption in the state, today arrested Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) Baljinder Singh, posted as an investigating officer at Police Station Lalru, District SAS Nagar, red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 30,000.

Disclosing this here today, an official spokesperson of the State Vigilance Bureau said that the above policeman has been arrested following a complaint filed by village Chhanna Gulab Singh Wala, district Bathinda, who is currently residing at Gilco Valley, Kharar, SAS Nagar district.

He further said that the complainant approached the Vigilance Bureau and lodged a complaint that the said ASI was investigating a case registered against him at Police Station Lalru under Sections 406 and 420 of the IPC and had demanded a bribe of Rs 1,30,000 from him. The complainant stated that this bribe was demanded from him in return for his favour in the investigation, which included protection from recovery of the fraudulent amount of Rs. 10,00,000 during police remand, leniency in future investigation and release of the complainant’s car which was seized by the said police personnel but not recorded.

He further stated that the complainant has been asked to immediately pay Rs. 30,000 as the first installment of the total bribe amount by the accused employee. It is pertinent to mention that the complainant had recorded all the conversations of the accused employee, which he submitted to the Vigilance Bureau as evidence.

The spokesperson said that taking immediate action on the complaint, the Flying Squad of the Vigilance Bureau registered a case under the Prevention of Corruption Act and formed a team to arrest the accused.

He further said that as per the plan, the accused ASI called the complainant to meet him at Punjabi Vaishno Dhaba located on the National Highway in Lalru where he reached in his personal vehicle. On this occasion, the vigilance team caught the accused red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs. 30,000 from the complainant in the presence of two official witnesses and further investigation of the case is underway in this regard.
