Chandigarh: The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) has arrested a private driver from Mohali red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 5,000 during its ongoing anti-corruption drive in the state.

According to an official spokesperson, the accused, identified as Amandeep, works as a private driver with Raftar Tools and Travel Company, Mohali. He was arrested following a complaint lodged by a resident of Kurukshetra, Haryana.

The complainant alleged that the accused had demanded Rs 60,000 to facilitate a compromise with the owner of Raftar Tools, who had earlier lodged a complaint against him at a police post. The deal was later settled for Rs 40,000.

Unwilling to pay the bribe, the complainant approached the VB Flying Squad-1, SAS Nagar. After verifying the complaint, the Vigilance Bureau laid a trap and caught the accused red-handed while accepting Rs 5,000 from the complainant in the presence of two official witnesses.

A case under the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered against the accused at the Vigilance Bureau Police Station, SAS Nagar. Further investigation into the matter is underway.
