Hail in Pathankot, rain in Mohali; IMD warns of strong winds across Chandigarh and 13 Punjab districts, monsoon likely weak this year

Chandigarh: Weather conditions deteriorated across Punjab and Chandigarh on Saturday. Hail fell early in the morning in Pathankot, while Mohali witnessed heavy rainfall. Conditions remain adverse in other districts as well. The Meteorological Department has issued a warning for rain and strong winds over the next two hours across 13 districts of Punjab including the ‘Tricity’ region (Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula).

These districts include Mohali, Fatehgarh Sahib, Patiala (Rajpura), Rupnagar, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Tarn Taran, Amritsar, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr, Gurdaspur, and Pathankot.

Temperature Drop and Heatwave Relief

According to the Meteorological Centre in Chandigarh, temperatures have dropped due to the impact of rainfall in the hilly regions. The department states that the heatwave is expected to subside completely by June 4.

The monsoon has been stalled over Kerala for the past five days. However, it is expected to make its entry into Punjab by June 25. There is a possibility that the monsoon will be weaker this year, a phenomenon attributed to the influence of El Niño.

Monsoon Outlook and Health Advisory

This influence affects the speed of monsoon winds and alters rainfall patterns. Consequently, districts such as Ludhiana, Patiala, Bathinda, Mansa, Sangrur, Fazilka, and Ferozepur are forecast to receive lower-than-normal rainfall.

Meanwhile, over the past 24 hours, the maximum temperature across Punjab has recorded a decline of up to 4.6 degrees Celsius. The highest temperature 43.4 degrees Celsius was recorded in Bathinda, where the mercury has now dropped to 2.8 degrees below the seasonal normal. In Chandigarh, the temperature has fallen by 4.4 degrees.

Currently, temperatures in several cities across the country are soaring past the 45-degree Celsius mark. During this season, even a slight lapse in caution can have severe repercussions on a child’s health. They can be protected from heatstroke also known as “loo” by making certain changes to their daily routine and diet.
