Punjab, Chandigarh Weather Update: Cold Intensifies as Rain, Strong Winds Likely from Jan 27

Chandigarh: Snowfall in the mountains has brought significant cold in the mornings and evenings in Punjab and Chandigarh. Maximum temperatures have increased slightly, but remain 3.6 degrees below normal. The Meteorological Department has not issued any alert for Monday.

However, light to moderate rain is expected at isolated places in Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, and Rupnagar districts bordering Himachal Pradesh. A yellow alert has been issued for strong winds, lightning, hail, and dense fog from January 27th to 29th.

The lowest temperature in the state was recorded at 3.4 degrees Celsius in Ferozepur. Bathinda also experienced a cold wave, with minimum temperatures ranging from 3.5 degrees Celsius to 7.5 degrees Celsius, and maximum temperatures ranging from 13.7 degrees Celsius to 17.2 degrees Celsius.

Another western disturbance will be active today.

According to the Meteorological Department, a Western Disturbance is currently persisting over Jammu and Himachal Pradesh. Its effects are visible in Himachal and nearby Punjab. A long trough of winds is also present at high altitude.

This is causing changes in the weather. Additionally, another low-pressure area extends from South Punjab through Rajasthan to Kutch (Gujarat). This area is expected to bring light to moderate rain, lightning, and strong winds on January 27th.

Wind speeds could increase from 40–50 km per hour to 60 km per hour. There is also a possibility of isolated hailstorms on January 27th. Following this, a new western disturbance may become active from January 30th.

Chances of rain on January 27

According to the Director of the Meteorological Department, light to moderate rain is likely at many places in the state on January 27. Light rain may occur in some selected areas on the 26th and 28th.

Minimum temperatures will remain largely unchanged over the next 24 hours. Temperatures are expected to rise by 4 to 6 degrees Celsius over the next two days, before falling by 3 to 5 degrees Celsius thereafter.

Light to moderate rain is expected in Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Rupnagar, Ludhiana, Barnala, Sangrur, Fatehgarh Sahib, Patiala, SAS Nagar (Mohali), and Malerkotla.
Strong winds of 30–50 kmph are possible. Cold conditions may intensify in Ferozepur, Fazilka, Faridkot, Muktsar, and Bathinda.

January 28

Cold wave conditions are likely in Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Bathinda, Ferozepur, Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Moga, Mansa, Sangrur, Fatehgarh Sahib, Muktsar, and Fazilka.
Light to moderate rain may occur at isolated places in Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Rupnagar, and SAS Nagar (Mohali).

January 29

Cold wave conditions may continue in Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Bathinda, Ferozepur, Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Moga, Mansa, Sangrur, Fatehgarh Sahib, Muktsar, and Fazilka.
Weather is expected to remain clear and dry, with no rainfall.
