Punjab Braces for Cold Wave Today, Rainy Days Ahead

Chandigarh: The Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for fog and cold wave conditions in Punjab and Chandigarh today, Friday. However, the weather will change from January 31st, and a spell of rain will begin again. Currently, while it is cold in the mornings and evenings, the daytime temperature has increased. The maximum temperature has risen by 1.4 degrees and is now close to normal. The lowest temperature was recorded at 3 degrees Celsius in Faridkot.

Cold Wave Alert in 9 Districts

Today, there is a possibility of cold wave conditions in some areas of Amritsar, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Bathinda, Ludhiana, Barnala, Mansa, Sangrur, and Malerkotla. Dense fog is also likely in some parts of Fazilka, Muktsar, Bathinda, and Mansa. Additionally, dense fog is expected in Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Tarn Taran, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr, Firozpur, Fazilka, Faridkot, Muktsar, Moga, Fatehgarh Sahib, Rupnagar, Patiala, and SAS Nagar (Mohali). The weather is expected to remain dry.

Western Disturbance Influencing Weather

A Western Disturbance is currently active over Jammu and surrounding areas. It is forming a vortex in the atmosphere, located at a considerable altitude above the ground. Its effects are also being felt in the upper atmosphere, leading to the observed weather changes. This system is expected to persist for now. Furthermore, another new Western Disturbance is likely to arrive over Northwest India from the night of January 30th, 2026, which could further change the weather.

Rainy Spell to Begin from January 31st

Light to moderate rainfall is expected at several places in the state on February 1st. Light to moderate rain is also possible at some places on January 31st, and on February 2nd and 3rd. There will be no significant change in the minimum temperature for the next 48 hours. After that, the minimum temperature is likely to increase by 3 to 4 degrees Celsius.

February 1: Thunderstorms and lightning are likely at isolated places in Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Fatehgarh Sahib, Rupnagar, Patiala, and SAS Nagar (Mohali). Strong winds with speeds of 30 to 40 km/h are also expected. Light to moderate rain will occur at several places.

February 2: Light to moderate rain is likely at isolated places in Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Rupnagar, and SAS Nagar (Mohali).
