Punjab Weather: Rain Likely in 9 Districts as Monsoon Weakens, Rainfall 29% Below Normal

Chandigarh: The monsoon has weakened slightly over Punjab and Chandigarh, with the state’s average temperature rising by 0.9 degrees Celsius in a day, according to the Meteorological Centre, Chandigarh. Light to moderate rain is expected at some places across nine districts on Tuesday.

Chandigarh is likely to experience partly cloudy skies with the possibility of one or two spells of rain or thundershowers.

The highest temperature in the state was recorded in Ferozepur at 37 degrees Celsius. Punjab has received 239.6 mm of rainfall, which is 29 per cent below normal.

Rain Likely in 9 Punjab Districts

Light to moderate rain is expected at some places in Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr, Fatehgarh Sahib, Rupnagar, Patiala and SAS Nagar (Mohali).

The lack of rainfall on Monday led to a rise in heat and humidity, causing discomfort among residents across several parts of the state.

Monsoon Trough Passing Through Amritsar

According to Surender Paul, Director of the Meteorological Centre, Chandigarh, the monsoon trough is currently passing through Amritsar, creating favourable conditions for rainfall in Punjab.

Light to moderate rain and thundershowers are likely in several parts of the state in the coming days.

A cyclonic circulation in the upper atmosphere over North Haryana and adjoining areas may also strengthen rainfall activity.

Punjab Weather Outlook Till August 27

Light rain is expected in southwestern parts of Punjab, while light to moderate rain is likely in other areas until August 27.

Maximum temperatures are expected to remain between 32-34 degrees Celsius in parts of Rupnagar, Mohali, Fatehgarh Sahib and Patiala. Northern and northeastern areas may record temperatures between 34-36 degrees, while southern and southwestern parts could see maximum temperatures between 36-40 degrees.

Maximum temperatures across Punjab are likely to remain above normal.

Minimum temperatures are expected to remain between 22-24°C in northern and northeastern areas, 24-26°C in central Punjab and 26-28°C in southern parts. Minimum temperatures may also remain above normal.

Punjab Power Demand Reaches 13,729 MW

Rising temperatures have also pushed up electricity demand in Punjab.

The state’s total power demand peaked at 13,729 MW during the night. Of this, around 8,727 MW was sourced from external grids, including the central pool, while Punjab generated approximately 5,002 MW from its own power generation units.
