Punjab Weather Update: Rain Lashes Pathankot, Clouds Cover Jalandhar; IMD Issues 4-Day Rain Alert for Punjab and Chandigarh

Chandigarh: Relief from the intense heat and humidity is likely across Punjab and Chandigarh as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast an increase in monsoon activity over the next 48 hours. The weather department has issued a four-day rain alert, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall in several districts between July 20 and 23.

Monsoon activity to intensify over next 48 hours

Chandigarh and several parts of Punjab are expected to witness widespread rainfall as monsoon conditions strengthen. Rainfall has already brought pleasant weather to Pathankot, while Jalandhar remained under cloudy skies on Sunday.

The IMD has forecast heavy rain in parts of North Punjab on Sunday, followed by widespread rainfall across the state from July 21 to July 23. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is also likely in Chandigarh, Mohali and adjoining districts, which is expected to bring significant relief from the prevailing hot and humid conditions.

Chandigarh records 6.4 mm rain; humidity remains high

Chandigarh received 6.4 mm of rainfall during the last 24 hours. However, sunshine after the rain pushed humidity levels higher.

The city’s maximum temperature settled at 36°C, which is 2.7°C above normal, while the minimum temperature was 26.4°C. Relative humidity peaked at 91 per cent.

Since June 1, Chandigarh has recorded 214.2 mm of rainfall, which is 30.6 per cent below the seasonal average.

Bathinda hottest in Punjab despite scattered showers

While light to moderate rain was reported from a few districts, hot weather persisted in several parts of Punjab.

Bathinda remained the hottest city in the state with a maximum temperature of 40.8°C, followed by Ferozepur (37.3°C) and Barnala (36.9°C).

The state’s average maximum temperature dropped by around 1°C compared to the previous day and remained close to normal. Meanwhile, Pathankot recorded the state’s lowest minimum temperature at 25.3°C.

According to the IMD’s seven-day forecast, rainfall activity is expected to increase significantly from Monday, with most parts of Punjab likely to receive widespread rain. The enhanced monsoon activity is expected to lower daytime temperatures and provide much-needed relief from the ongoing heat and humidity.
