Punjab weather remains clear; AQI dips due to this reaon

The weather in Punjab remains clear. There is no significant change in temperature at this time. According to the Meteorological Center, the weather will remain similar in the coming days. A Western Disturbance is likely to become active around Diwali, but its impact will not be visible in Punjab, nor will there be any significant drop in temperatures.

Amidst this stable weather, people’s breathing has become difficult. The Air Quality Index (AQI) has crossed 100 in most cities across the state, prompting a yellow alert in several locations. Amritsar is the only city where the AQI remains below 100. “Thermal inversion” is believed to be the main reason behind this increasing pollution.

What is thermal inversion?

Under normal conditions, air temperature decreases with increasing altitude. This means that warm surface air rises and carries pollution particles with it, keeping the atmosphere clean. However, during thermal inversion, this process is reversed. During this time, the air near the surface becomes cooler, and the air above becomes relatively warmer.

The warm upper layer acts like a lid, trapping cold air beneath it. This prevents dust, smoke, and gases in the lower layer from rising. As a result, the lower atmosphere becomes filled with pollutants, and the combination of haze and smoke creates smog.

The Meteorological Department says that such conditions are likely to persist for the next few days. Therefore, experts have advised people to limit outdoor activities in the morning and evening and adopt pollution prevention measures.
