Punjab Weather: Heavy Rain in Mohali, Showers in Jalandhar; Rain Alert for 13 Districts as Monsoon Weakens

Chandigarh: Heavy overnight rainfall in Mohali and morning showers in Jalandhar brought temporary relief from the heat in parts of Punjab on Monday. However, the southwest monsoon has lost momentum across the state, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting weak monsoon activity between July 13 and July 18. While rain is expected in 13 districts today, most parts of Punjab are likely to experience hot and humid conditions over the coming days.

Meanwhile, a tragic incident was reported from Patiala, where two boys drowned in the Bhakra Canal after being swept away by the strong current while bathing with friends on Sunday evening.

Rain Forecast for 13 Districts; Chandigarh to Remain Cloudy

According to the IMD, rainfall is likely at isolated places in Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar (Nawanshahr), Rupnagar, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Fatehgarh Sahib, Patiala and Mohali on Monday.

Over the past 24 hours, weather remained largely dry across Punjab, with only light to moderate rainfall recorded in some border and sub-Himalayan districts.

Chandigarh is expected to witness partly cloudy skies throughout the day with one or two spells of rain or thundershowers. However, the IMD has not issued any weather alert for the Union Territory.

Two Boys Drown in Bhakra Canal Near Patiala

Two of five friends who had entered the Bhakra Canal on the Patiala-Nabha Road for a swim on Sunday evening drowned after being caught in the strong current.

Divers continued the search operation on Monday. Shankar Bhardwaj, President of the Bhole Shankar Divers Club, said three youths were rescued safely while efforts were underway to locate the remaining two.

Power Demand Declines; Bhakra and Pong Dams at Safe Levels

The drop in temperatures has also reduced Punjab’s electricity demand. On Sunday, the state’s peak demand stood at 12,479 MW.

Punjab drew 7,138 MW of electricity from the national grid, which was 722 MW above its allocated share, while its own power plants generated 5,360 MW. Grid frequency remained stable at 50 Hz.

Water levels in the state’s major reservoirs remain comfortably below danger marks.

• Bhakra Dam: Water level at 1,578.87 feet, around 101 feet below the danger level of 1,680 feet. The dam is receiving 46,569 cusecs of water while releasing 25,618 cusecs.
• Pong Dam: Water level at 1,322.41 feet, about 68 feet below the danger mark of 1,390 feet. The reservoir is receiving 31,100 cusecs and releasing 16,151 cusecs.

The current reservoir status indicates there is no immediate flood risk from the two major dams.

Weak Monsoon to Bring Hot and Humid Weather

According to weather experts, the southwest monsoon has weakened as the monsoon trough has shifted closer to the Himalayan foothills, reducing rainfall over the plains of Punjab. As a result, residents are likely to experience humid and sultry weather, with daytime temperatures expected to rise to around 37°C despite occasional cloud cover.

During the next five to six days, only isolated northern districts bordering the hills are expected to receive light showers. Weather models indicate that a fresh spell of widespread rainfall may return around July 20–21, when the monsoon is likely to become active again.

The temporary lull in rainfall may reduce the immediate risk of flooding but could also increase discomfort due to humidity and heat. Farmers and residents are advised to monitor IMD forecasts, particularly as rainfall is expected to become more widespread later this month.
