Punjab Weather Update: Temp drops by 8 degrees; Alert for heavy rain and strong winds issued

Due to the rainfall that occurred in the state on Monday after the Western Disturbance became active, the temperature in Punjab dropped by 8.1 degrees in 24 hours. Consequently, the maximum temperature in the state was recorded 9 degrees below normal. The highest temperature in the state was recorded in Faridkot at 28.1 degrees.

A yellow alert has been issued for 12 districts of Punjab today (October 7). This alert is in effect in Sangrur, Patiala, Fatehgarh Sahib, Mohali, Ludhiana, Rupnagar, Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Hoshiarpur, Gurdaspur, and Pathankot. In addition to heavy rain, strong winds of up to 40 km/h are also expected. The weather is expected to remain normal in other districts.

Water levels in dams have dropped, bringing relief

Following the Western Disturbance, flood gates were opened to reduce the water level in dams, which have been continuously flowing out. However, it is a matter of relief that now that the water level has decreased, the discharge of water is also being reduced.

Water levels in the dams on the state’s three major rivers, the Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi, are currently above normal. According to data received as of 6 a.m. Monday, water storage at the Bhakra, Pong, and Thein (Ranjit Sagar) dams is higher than last year.

The Bhakra Dam, on the Sutlej River, has a maximum filling level of 1,685 feet and a total storage capacity of 5,918 MAF. As of 6 a.m. Monday, the dam’s water level was recorded at 1,670.67 feet, with 5,349 MAF of water present. This represents 90.39 percent of its total capacity. Last year, on the same day, the water level was 1,648.14 feet and storage was 4,517 MAF. Currently, Bhakra is receiving 24,327 cusecs of water, while outflows are recorded at 40,272 cusecs.
