Weather to Change in Punjab, Chandigarh as Western Disturbances Trigger Fog, Rain Alert

The weather in Punjab and Chandigarh is about to change. A western disturbance has reached the mountains, while two others are following it. Due to this, the Meteorological Department has issued an alert for dense fog tonight (Tuesday) and tomorrow. Rain, strong winds, and lightning are expected starting Thursday.

Clear Morning Brings Temporary Relief

However, the state experienced clear weather this morning, with no fog, bringing relief from the cold wave. The maximum temperature increased by 1.4 degrees Celsius, now 4.8 degrees Celsius above normal. Minimum temperatures ranged from 2.9 to 9 degrees Celsius, with the lowest temperature recorded in Amritsar at 2.9 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, ahead of the rain and snowfall in Himachal Pradesh, a yellow cold wave alert has been issued for five districts today. This warning has been issued for Una, Hamirpur, Bilaspur, Mandi, and Kangra districts. The cold wave in these districts will cause severe cold in the morning, evening, and night.

Dense fog likely in 7 districts:

According to the Meteorological Department, dense fog is likely to prevail in seven districts Amritsar, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Fatehgarh Sahib, Patiala and Sangrur today. The weather will remain dry. However, cold wave was recorded in Amritsar on Monday. Similarly, zero degree visibility was recorded in Amritsar and 80 meter visibility was recorded in Bathinda.

Western Disturbance to Affect Punjab Weather

A western disturbance formed around northern Pakistan is now affecting areas of northern Punjab. This weather system remains at a higher altitude, causing the weather to change. Furthermore, a new western disturbance may reach northwest India on the night of January 21, 2026, which is likely to cause further changes in the weather.

The temperature will no longer rise.

Meteorological Department Director Surendra Pal Singh stated that there is a strong possibility of light to moderate rain in some parts of the state on the 22nd and 24th. Rain is possible in many areas of the state on the 23rd, followed by scattered rainfall. There will be no significant change in the minimum temperature for the next three days, after which the temperature may rise by 2 to 3 degrees.
