Last Day of Monsoon in Punjab Today; Bathinda remains hottest @ 36.9 degrees

Today, September 20th, is the last day of the monsoon in Punjab. Light rain is expected in some parts of the state. The Meteorological Department has predicted that the rain will bring down temperatures in many areas today, providing relief from the humid heat.

According to the Meteorological Department, the highest maximum temperature in the state was 36.9 degrees Celsius, recorded in Bathinda. The lowest temperature was 30 degrees Celsius in Pathankot. Experts say that light rain and thundershowers are expected in various parts of the state.

Flood gates opened by one foot each yesterday

The water level of the Bhakra Dam is continuously rising. Yesterday, Friday, the water level was recorded at 1677.68 feet, which was about 2.32 feet below the danger mark of 1680 feet. As a precaution, all four flood gates of the dam were opened by one foot each. Currently, the inflow into the dam is 56,334 cusecs, while 40,000 cusecs is being released through turbines and flood gates.

Water is being discharged from the Nangal Dam into canals and the Sutlej River, with 9,000 cusecs each released into the Nangal Hydel Canal and Anandpur Hydel Canal. Meanwhile, the Sutlej River is receiving 27,000 cusecs of water.

Sutlej water level rises again, threatening several areas

The water level of the Sutlej River has risen due to rain. The threat to the Dhussi Dam in the Mandala Chhanna area has deepened. The rapid flow of water has breached the dam’s retaining barriers, causing four houses near the dam to collapse.

The Meteorological Department predicts that the monsoon will completely withdraw from Punjab by September 20th. As it moves through the central parts of the state, some districts may experience moderate to heavy rainfall today and tomorrow. The Meteorological Department has advised people to remain alert regarding this.
