Punjab weather update: Orange-Red alert for rain continues; Flood in 9 districts

9 districts of Punjab are in the grip of floods. These include Fazilka, Ferozepur, Kapurthala, Pathankot, Tarn Taran, Hoshiarpur, Moga, Gurdaspur and Barnala. An alert has also been issued for Jalandhar. According to government figures, 1312 villages have been affected so far. An orange alert for rain is still in force today.

On Monday night, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann over the phone and assured all possible help from the Center. At the same time, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi appealed to the central and state governments to speed up the relief and rescue work.

He said that in view of such a huge devastation, the government should work in mission mode so that farmers, laborers, livestock farmers, and common people can get immediate help. CM Bhagwant Mann has called a high-level meeting through video conference today. Decisions will be taken regarding flood management in this.

Finance Minister demands 60 thousand crores
Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Cheema has demanded the release of Rs 60 thousand crores from the Central Government. Cheema said that Punjab is facing the worst flood disaster in decades, affecting about 1,300 villages and lakhs of people in distress. Floods continue to wreak havoc in Gurdaspur, Kapurthala, Amritsar, Pathankot, Ferozepur, Fazilka and Hoshiarpur districts due to rain and water released from dams.

About three lakh acres of agricultural land, especially paddy crop, is submerged in water, due to which farmers have suffered huge losses just a few weeks before harvesting. Along with this, large-scale deaths of livestock have given a deep economic blow to rural families.

Bhakra water level rises again
Bhakra Dam: The water level has increased rapidly in the last 24 hours, rising to 2.40 feet. On Monday morning, the water level reached 1675.08 feet, only 5 feet below the maximum limit of 1680 feet. The inflow of water from the Sutlej river has reached 1.9 lakh cusecs, three times more than the previous several days. The discharge was around 53,000 cusecs, but the inflow was far more than the discharge, due to which the water level has increased rapidly.

Pong Dam: The maximum limit of the dam is 1390 feet. Last week, the water level had risen to 1394 feet. However, on Monday, the water level decreased slightly to 1390.36 feet. During this time, the discharge was recorded to be around 1.1 lakh cusecs.

Ranjit Sagar Dam: It had crossed the danger mark last week and is still in a critical condition.
