Pakistan: Pakistani authorities have initiated the process of deporting Sarabjit Kaur, a resident of Punjab, who traveled to Nankana Sahib with a group of Sikh pilgrims in November. Sarabjit had gone to Pakistan on a pilgrimage to mark the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji but did not return with the group, sparking controversy.
Investigation revealed that Sarabjit had separated from the group, converted to Islam, and married Nasir Hussain, a resident of Sheikhupura district, Pakistan.
Conversion and Nikah in Pakistan
According to Pakistani police, Sarabjit arrived in Pakistan on November 4 and married Nasir Hussain the following day. A police officer told news agency PTI that Sarabjit had stated that they had converted to Islam and married of their own free will.
After the wedding, the couple reportedly went into hiding, prompting police to search for them. Meanwhile, an 18-second video of their marriage surfaced on social media and Pakistani media, in which Sarabjit—who has reportedly changed her name to Noor Hussain—is seen saying she is converting to Islam voluntarily. In the video, she also stated that she has known Nasir for the past nine years, is divorced, and is marrying him of her own free will.
Legal Battle and Return to India
A few days later, Sarabjit and Nasir approached the Lahore High Court, alleging that the police were harassing them to end their marriage and that their home had been illegally raided. On November 18, Justice Farooq Haider directed the police not to harass the couple.
In the petition, Sarabjit stated that her husband is a Pakistani citizen and that she had contacted the Indian mission to obtain Pakistani citizenship. However, a joint team of Pakistan’s Intelligence Bureau and local police subsequently detained Sarabjit and Nasir.
The Pakistani government has now initiated the process of sending Sarabjit Kaur to India. She is expected to be handed over to Indian authorities at the Attari-Wagah border crossing on Monday evening.
