The regional unit of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Amritsar, has busted another major case of foreign currency smuggling. On Friday, the officials, based on intelligence information, intercepted a passenger who arrived from Dubai by Air India Express flight at Amritsar International Airport.

On searching him, foreign currency worth 41,400 US dollars (about Rs 35.40 lakh in Indian currency) was recovered from him. According to information received from DRI, preliminary investigation has revealed that the passenger had brought foreign currency to India with the intention of smuggling by hiding it in his luggage.

When the officials started a thorough search of his luggage on the basis of suspicion, specially hidden US dollars were recovered from it.

Seizure under the Customs Act, over the RBI limit

The DRI said that the foreign currency seized is in excess of the legal limit prescribed by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Hence, it has been seized under the Customs Act 1962. Preliminary interrogation has indicated that the accused person was smuggling for the purpose of monetary gain.

Second case in a month

It is worth noting that this case is the second major case of foreign currency smuggling within a month. Earlier on May 3, DRI had caught another passenger with foreign currency worth Rs 2.66 crore. It is clear from both the cases that smuggling gangs are trying to bring foreign currency to India in an organized manner from foreign countries like Dubai.
