Punjab Police has again changed the head of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) and its 2 other members in the drugs case against former Akali minister Bikram Singh Majithia.
This is the 5th SIT formed to investigate the case registered against Majithia in December 2021 during the Congress government. The copy of the orders regarding the formation of the new SIT states that the office of the Director of Investigation Bureau has reconstituted the SIT on administrative grounds to investigate the case of FIR No. 2/2021.
According to the orders, AIG (Provisioning) Varun Sharma, who was earlier a member of the SIT, has been appointed as the chairperson of the SIT in place of DIG HS Bhullar, while Tarn Taran SSP Abhimanyu Rana and SP (NRI Affairs, Patiala) Gurbans Singh Bains have been made its members.
All the previous SITs were headed by officers of DIG rank or above, but this is the first time that an AIG rank officer has been entrusted with such an important responsibility. The SIT was first set up under the leadership of AIG Balraj Singh to investigate the allegations against Majithia.
After the formation of the Aam Aadmi Party government in the state, DIG Rahul S was appointed as the head of the SIT in place of AIG Balraj Singh. However, the SIT failed to file a challan against Majithia.
In May 2023, IG (Patiala Range) MS Chhina was made the head of the SIT. Despite Chhina being promoted as Additional DGP, he remained the head of the SIT till December 2024, till his retirement.
