With the premature exit of a private company entrusted with the task of printing Driving License (DL) and Registration Certificate (RC) for the Punjab Transport Department, at least 6 lakh people in the state are waiting for RC and DL. The contract of M/s Smart Chip Private Limited was to expire in July this year. However, the company prematurely exited in November last year, causing a lot of trouble for the government and the license and registration certificate holders. Since then, the government has not been able to make DL and RC available on smart cards.
In a five-working day period in a week, around 10,000 smart cards are printed in Punjab. Due to non-printing, the government is facing a pending issue of 10,000 cards every day, 50,000 in a week and around 2 lakh in a month. A government source said that it is now seeing a pending issue of over 6 lakh cards.
A senior government official said that earlier 3.5 lakh cases were pending. Now, we have cleared the backlog of 50,000 in a few days. We are now working on all days of the week. Our team is also working on Saturdays and Sundays. We will clear the entire backlog within this month.
AAP MLA Gurdit Singh raised the issue of delay in printing on the first day of the budget session in the Vidhan Sabha on Friday. In a question, he asked Transport Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar about the number of pending cases of registration of new vehicles, transfer of old vehicles in Faridkot.
Regarding this, the minister said that 636 RC. are pending, 871 old registration transfer, 451 new driving licenses and 357 renewal of old licenses are pending. The minister assured the house that the pendency of these documents will be cleared within a month in the entire state.
