According to Punjab Remote Sensing Center data, from September 15 to November 10, 6,611 incidents of stubble burning took place in Punjab. Among the districts, 116 cases of farm fires have been reported in Sangrur, 44 in Mansa, 26 in Ferozepur, 24 each in Moga and Faridkot and 20 in Muktsar.
Burning of stubble after paddy harvesting in October and November in Punjab and Haryana is often blamed for the increase in air pollution in Delhi.
Since the window for growing rubber crops, especially wheat, after the paddy harvest is very short, some farmers set fire to their fields to quickly clear crop residues for planting the next crop. A total of 36,663 farm fire incidents were reported in Punjab in 2023, a 26 percent decline in such incidents from the previous year. The state recorded 49,922 fire incidents in 2022, 71,304 in 2021, 76,590 in 2020, 55,210 in 2019 and 50,590 in 2018.
Punjab recorded 345 incidents of stubble burning in fields on Sunday, of which 116 occurred in Sangrur, taking the total number of stubble-burning cases in the state to over 6,600.
