Tarn Taran, July 27: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has accelerated its preparations for the by-election to be held in Tarn Taran assembly constituency. The party has handed over the responsibility of in-charge of the constituency to former MLA Harmeet Singh Sandhu, who left the Shiromani Akali Dal and joined AAP 10 days ago.
Speculations about candidacy
It is believed that AAP may also announce him as a candidate, although while joining the party, Sandhu had made it clear that he is not a candidate, but has only joined the party as a worker. Despite this, speculations about his candidacy continue.
A strong face was needed for Tarn Taran
In the 2022 assembly elections, AAP’s Kashmir Singh Sohil was elected MLA from Tarn Taran constituency. But on 27 June 2025, he died due to illness, due to which the seat became vacant. This constituency is considered a Panthic seat.
Amritpal Singh’s party will also contest the elections
The party of Khalistan supporters and MP Amritpal Singh, who is lodged in Dibrugarh jail in Assam, has also announced to contest the elections from this constituency. In this context, AAP was looking for a strong and influential face. For these reasons, Harmeet Singh Sandhu was selected.
Harmeet Singh Sandhu had joined AAP in the presence of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and party in-charge Manish Sisodia at Punjab Bhawan in Chandigarh.
