Ludhiana:

Just two days ahead of Ludhiana’s Mayor election, which is to be held on January 20, Aam Aadmi Party has inducted one more recently won Congress councilor into their party on Saturday, increasing their strength to 48.

Today, Congress councilor from Ward 41 Mamta Rani along with some other congress leaders have joined AAP in presence of AAP state chief Aman Arora.

With this AAP has crossed the half-way mark of 95-member Ludhiana Corporation and can prove the majority to elect the Mayor of the city.

Moreover, as recently earlier this month the local bodies department had issued a notification reserving the mayoral post for women in Ludhiana under The Punjab Reservation for the Offices of Mayors of Municipal Corporations, Rules, 2017, the AAP will looking forward to elect the first woman mayor of Ludhiana.

As per the insiders, the probable candidates for the position of Mayor are Amrit Varsha Rampal, Maninder Kaur Ghuman, Nidhi Gupta, Principal Inderjeet Kaur and Mehak Tinna. Among all these probable candidates, Amrit Varsha Rampal is the only candidate who had won councilor elections for four consecutive times. However, it is learnt that other candidates are also using making efforts to convince the senior leadership of the party.

Since December 21 after elections were held for Municipal Corporation and AAP had bagged 41 seats followed by Congress with 30 seats, BJP with 19 seats, Shiromani Akali Dal (2) and three seats were won by Independent candidates, Ludhiana is witnessing a high drama with several councilors switching from one party to another.

AAP first inducted an independent candidate from ward 11 Deepa Rani Choudhary and then Shiromani Akali Dal councilor from ward 20 Chatarveer Singh Kamal Arora was inducted into party but after a few days, Kamal Arora rejoined Akali Dal while accusing AAP for pressurizing him by getting a fake FIR registered against him.

Besides, a dramatic turn of events was witnessed on December 26 when Congress elected councilor Jagdish Lal from ward 6 switched between parties thrice on the same day. He first joined AAP then after some hours returned to Congress and then after some more hours he again shifted to AAP.

Later, on January 10 and 11, four councilors including two from Congress party —Jagmeet Singh Noni from ward 42 and Paramjit Kaur (wife of Parminder Soma) from ward 45, one BJP councilor from ward 21 Anita Nanchahal and an Independent councilor from ward 1 Ratanjit Kaur, wife of former councilor Randhir Singh Sivia had joined AAP.
