Chandigarh: Panchayat elections will be held in Punjab on October 15. Announcing this, Punjab State Election Commissioner Raj Kamal Chaudhary said that nominations for Panchs and Sarpanchs can be filed from 27th to 4th October. October 5th is last date for scrutiny of nominations while Last date of withdrawal will October 7.
Polling will be held on October 15 from 8 am to 4 pm and counting of the votes will also be held on the same day.
A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed in the Punjab Haryana High Court regarding the non-conduct of elections of the District Council, Panchayat Samiti and Gram Panchayat in Punjab. A few days ago, the Punjab government, while responding in the Punjab-Haryana High Court, had said to get them done soon.
Let us tell you that about 13,000 Gram Panchayats had already been dissolved in Punjab. Two weeks ago, the government had also dissolved 76 out of the remaining 153 Panchayat Samitis.
There are a total of 13241 Panchayats in the state. While there are 153 block committees and 23 district councils. Their term ended on 31 December 2023. Hoshiarpur district has the highest number of panchayats in the state at 1405, while Patiala has 1022 panchayats. Elections for the dissolved panchayats are still pending since December last year.
