Ottawa : According to Canada-based CBC News reports, Canadian police have arrested a fourth suspect for alleged involvement in the murder of designated terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijhar. Nijhar was murdered on June 18, 2023 outside a Gurdwara in Surrey, British Columbia.

The accused has been identified as 22-year-old Amandeep Singh. According to the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) in British Columbia, Amandeep Singh was already in the custody of Peel Regional Police in Ontario on unrelated weapons charges.

IHIT followed up on the evidence and obtained enough information for the BC Prosecution Service to charge Amandeep Singh with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder, police said in a statement.

First these three Indians were arrested
Investigators have not released further details of the arrest, citing the ongoing investigation and court proceedings. This news comes a few days after Canadian police arrested three Indian nationals – Karan Brar, Kamalpreet Singh and Karanpreet Singh in Edmonton.

In 2020, NIA declared Nijhar as a terrorist
Hardeep Singh Nijhar was declared a terrorist by India’s National Investigation Agency in 2020. In June last year, he was shot dead as soon as he came out of a Gurdwara in Surrey. The attack has been described as highly coordinated. Six people and two vehicles were involved in it.

At the same time, the Canadian police has not given any evidence of any connection with India, as was being speculated in the Canadian media. Nijhar’s killing sparked diplomatic tensions between Canada and India when Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused India of complicity in the killing, which the Indian government dismissed as absurd.

The accused did not seek diplomatic help
Earlier this week, the Ministry of External Affairs reiterated that Canada has not provided any specific evidence or relevant information in the Hardeep Singh Nijhar murder case and that there has been no formal communication from India about the arrest of the three Indians allegedly involved. Only information about their arrest has been given.

Asked if India has provided consular access to the three Indians arrested in the Nijjar murder case, the Ministry of External Affairs said it had not received any request from the Canadian side.
