Chandigarh: The Punjab government has got a big relief from Punjab and Haryana High Court in the recruitment process of 1158 assistant professors and librarians. The double bench of the court has given the green signal to the recruitment process. It is clear from this that now the people involved in that recruitment process will be able to get jobs. However, earlier the recruitment process was dismissed. It was said that rules have not been followed in the recruitment.  but now giving respite to all the candidates and Punjab Government, the court has given the green signal to the whole recruitment process. Stations were not allotted to the applicants who had joined.

These appointments were initially made during the tenure of the previous Charanjit Singh Channi government but were later halted by the High Court, citing constitutional concerns.

In October 2021, former higher education minister, Pargat Singh, announced the recruitment of 1,091 teaching positions and 67 librarian posts with the promise of filling them based solely on written tests within 45 days.

Subsequently, 33 advertisements inviting applications for these posts were issued on October 19. The minimum criterion to apply was a post-graduation degree along with UGC-NET qualification.

Later, 1158 candidates were shortlisted and around 607 were even handed over appointment letters but the process was challenged, and in December 2021, the court placed a stay on the recruitment.

The government had argued in the court that there is a shortage of professors in colleges which is affecting the career of students. In such a situation, this recruitment process should not be rejected. The government while strongly putting forward its side in the court said  that permission should be given to complete this recruitment process.

On the decision of High Court, Education minister Harjot Singh Bains said, “Our government has successfully won the appeal in the 1158 Asst. Professors case. Congrats to all involved, especially our dedicated legal team! This is the second major recruitment victory after 2364 ETT. Both were pending in court since long due to faults of previous government. A step forward for a better future of Higher Education in Punjab. Thanks to all the candidates who showed trust in us and waited patiently till today.”
