Ludhiana, May 29: By-elections are to be held on June 19 for the Ludhiana West Assembly seat. The results will be declared on June 23. So far, Congress has declared former cabinet minister Bharat Bhushan Ashu as its candidate. Ashu has also filed his nomination today under the leadership of state president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring.
Aam Aadmi Party has fielded Rajya Sabha member Sanjeev Arora. Shiromani Akali Dal has given ticket to Advocate Paropkar Singhal Ghuman. Among all these parties, BJP has lagged far behind in announcing its candidate.
The BJP candidate will get very little time for campaigning, whereas if we talk about Ashu or Sanjeev Arora, both these candidates have been continuously engaged in campaigning for the last one and a half months.
Advocate Bikram Singh Sidhu’s name is at the forefront
It is expected that today (Thursday) BJP can announce the name of its candidate. So far the name of Advocate Bikram Singh Sidhu is in the lead. The party is also discussing the second name of General Secretary Jeevan Gupta.
Among the women contenders, former Mayor Hemraj Agarwal’s daughter-in-law Rashi Agarwal is also in the race. The BJP high command is also keeping an eye on the results of the assembly elections held in 2022. The number of votes Bikram Sidhu got is also being reviewed.
Gurpreet Bassi won with 40,443 votes
According to the current political situation, there is going to be a contest between the Aam Aadmi Party, Congress and the BJP on this seat. If we look at the results of the 2022 assembly elections, Aam Aadmi Party candidate Gurpreet Bassi Gogi emerged victorious with 40 thousand 443 votes.
Bharat Bhushan Ashu of Congress came second with 32 thousand 931 votes. Similarly, BJP’s Bikram Singh Sidhu also performed well and secured third position by getting 28 thousand 107 votes. Due to these equations, if BJP gives ticket to Bikram Sidhu, then there can be a triangular contest on this seat. On the other hand, SAD is fighting this election to save its reputation. SAD candidate Advocate Paropkar Singh Ghuman is in the election fray.
