Efforts have intensified towards resuming direct flights to religious places from Chandigarh Airport and adding new routes.

Chandigarh, July 22: Efforts have intensified towards resuming direct flights to religious places from Chandigarh Airport and adding new routes. After Chandigarh Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria’s meeting with Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu, Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport Authority has started a series of meetings with airline companies.

During the meeting, the airport authorities urged the airlines to focus on the possibility of direct flights to Ayodhya and Nanded Sahib so that pilgrims can get easy access to these religious places. The officials clarified that now the Chandigarh airport is operational 24 hours and all necessary facilities are available.

The flight to Ayodhya was operational only till Maha Kumbh

In 2019, Air India started a direct flight to Nanded Sahib, but it was stopped during Covid and has not resumed yet. Similarly, a direct flight to Ayodhya was also operated during the Maha Kumbh, which received a good response, but after the Kumbh ended, this flight was also stopped.

Discussion on resuming the stopped flights

The meeting also discussed the resumption of the flights from Chandigarh to Dehradun, Pune, Amritsar, Udaipur, Guwahati, Bhubaneswar and Kullu, which were running but have now been stopped. The airlines were asked why these flights were stopped and there was a discussion on low passenger numbers and other technical reasons.

Emphasis on increasing the connectivity of religious routes

Chandigarh International Airport CEO Ajay Verma said that continuous meetings are being held with the airlines regarding the possibility of flights to religious places. He said that serious discussions have also been held about the flights that have been stopped. “Our effort is to increase the connectivity of Chandigarh so that direct flights to religious places can be resumed,” he said.
