Chandigarh: Electricity department in UT goes into private hands, 160 employees take VRS in protest

EEDL has invested ₹871 crore in the project, which is above the reserved price.

From February 1, i.e. today the electricity distribution system in Chandigarh will be completely in the hands of the private sector. The Chandigarh administration has signed a share purchase agreement with Eminent Electricity Distribution Limited (EEDL), a subsidiary of the RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group. From today, the electricity department of Union Territory Chandigarh has been handed over to private group EEDL.

This significant change has already received approval from the Punjab and Haryana High Court in November 2024 and the Supreme Court in December 2024.

EEDL has invested ₹871 crore in the project, which is above the reserved price. The company has promised to provide better services to over 2.35 lakh consumers in the city.

To modernize electricity distribution, smart grid technology will be used to ensure 24-hour uninterrupted power supply. A dedicated helpline and an online grievance redressal system will also be set up for consumer convenience.

Plans have also been made to promote green energy under the Smart City Mission. The Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission (JERC) will monitor electricity rates, ensuring that the tariff remains transparent and balanced.

On the other hand, 160 government employees took VRS together in protest against privatization. Employees called from Punjab-Haryana to handle the situation also refused to come. In view of security, fire tenders have been deployed near the power sub-stations.

A share purchase agreement was signed on Friday between the Chandigarh Administration, Eminent Electricity Distribution Limited (EEDL) and Chandigarh Power Distribution Limited. RP-Sanjiv Goenka (RP-SG) Group has officially taken over the electricity department of the UT through its subsidiary EEDL. Now from Saturday, 860 employees of the electricity department have become employees of the private company, while 160 employees have taken VRS in protest. This includes employees of many categories including linemen, JE.
