Chandigarh: Important meeting on SYL issue tomorrow, CMs of Haryana and Punjab to take part

The meeting will be attended by Chief Minister Punjab Bhagwant Mann and his counterpart in Haryana Manohar Lal Khattar.

Chandigarh: An important meeting on the subject of SYL will be held in Chandigarh tomorrow. Meeting called by Union Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat will be held tomorrow in Hotel Taj at 4 pm. The meeting will be attended by Chief Minister Punjab Bhagwant Mann and his counterpart in Haryana Manohar Lal Khattar.

Apart from the Union Minister and Chief Ministers of both states, other officials including Chief secretaries of the states will also be involved in the proposed meeting.

The meeting has been called to discuss the issue of Satluj Yamuna Link (SYL). Earlier Manohar Lal Khattar called the issue of SYL as a long pending issue of both states and demanded the state’s share as mandated by Supreme Court. On the other hand, Punjab Government has shown a strong stand on the issue saying already that Punjab has no water to share with anyone.

What is the Issue of SYL?

The SYL conflict dates back to 1981 water-sharing agreement after Haryana was carved out of Punjab in 1966. The apex court on October 4 came down heavily on the Punjab government for its delayed approach towards the construction of the SYL canal.

The apex court, in its order, has directed the Centre to look into the mediation process over the dispute and also carry out a survey on Punjab side to see the extent of construction made by the state. In March, the apex court had directed the Centre to play a more active role in the resolution as the main arbitrator in the case.

In July 2020, the court had asked the Chief Ministers of the two states to resolve the issue amicably.
