Retired DIG Inderjit Singh Sidhu shows way to cleanliness at 88, picks garbage from Chandigarh roads

His commitment and dedication inspire people of all age groups to do their bit to keep the surroundings neat.

Chandigarh: At times when many of us choose sleep over waking up early, 88-year-old retired DIG Inderjit Singh Sidhu is setting an example for society by transcending the normal. Retired IPS officer Inderjit Singh Sidhu, who served as DIG, starts his morning by leading a cleanliness drive on the streets of Chandigarh. Former DIG’s action came to light when his video got viral on social media, in which he can be seen pulling a cart and picking up garbage from the road.

Most people of his age either prefer rest or morning walks. Defying the norm, retired IPS officer himself collects garbage in a cycle cart in Sector 49. Without missing a day, he can be seen on roads at sharp six with a resolution to keep the surroundings clean.

At this age, whenever he gets time, he starts cleaning the streets. His commitment and dedication inspire people of all age groups to do their bit to keep the surroundings neat.

Mr Sidhu was disappointed as ‘The City Beautiful’ Chandigarh missed the first spot in 2024-25 Swachh Survekshan. He believes that if every citizen contributes in his own way, Chandigarh can easily achieve the top rank.

Inderjit Singh Sidhu was particularly upset with Chandigarh’s relatively poor ranking in the annual survey of cleanliness. He felt that the city, known as the ‘Beautiful City’, should aim for the top spot in the cleanliness rankings. While he considers his contribution small, he says he is doing everything his age and physical strength allow.

“I will continue to do this for the betterment of the city as long as I am alive”, said Inderjit Sidhu. On support from his family,  he said that his family wholeheartedly supports his efforts to keep the city clean.
