The Chandigarh Mayoral elections have been postponed till further notice.

As per reports the decision has been taken in view of ill health of Anil Masih.

Anil Masih was appointed as the presiding authority for the elections. As per reports following his ill health, decision to postpone the elections was taken.

The new date has not been announced yet.

The election of Mayor in Chandigarh was going to be a big election for AAP, Congress and BJP as this was for the first time AAP and Congress were going to contest elections together. Congress has announced to take the matter into the court.

Regarding conduct of Mayoral elections in Chandigarh, a new circular has come to fore which said, “It is informed that a telephonic message has been received regarding ill health of Sh Anil Masih who has been nominated as Presiding authority for the meeting scheduled on 18.1.24 for the post of mayor u/60 (a) read with Regulation 6(1) of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation(Procedure and Conduct of Business) Regulation 1996. In view of above, it is requested not to reach MC office till further orders are received please”.

AAP leader Sandeep Pathak in a tweet on X, said “Staring at its inevitable defeat the BJP has started its dirty tricks machinery in Chandigarh. If this is the kind of election system we have in the country then it’s highly discouraging.”

he further added, “The BJP is trying hard to postpone the mayor election in Chandigarh by misusing the government apparatus. We will not let them succeed.”

The mve to postpone elections led to uproar among the workers and leaders of AAP and Congress. If we look at the numbers, then currently out of 35, BJP has 14 councillors whereas on second spot there is AAP with 13. Congress party has seven councillors while SAD has one member.
